Here’s a tutorial series I actually made in 2011 for setting up Adobe Lightroom 3 for the first time. Lightroom is great, but must be setup and organized correctly otherwise you’ll have a mess (in my opinion ). These tutorials are meant to be followed along. So turn one on and work along with me! Yes, it requires some initial setup, and it requires some overall folder structure organization… but if you [...]

So you’ve finally done it! You’ve gone out and purchased that nice dSLR camera so you can capture better images! You’ve seen what others with a detachable lens have been able to come up with- it must be the camera right? While purchasing the camera was your first step, the thought of using it outside of “Auto” scares you, doesn’t it? Hopefully this tutorial will give you a better understanding of how [...]

I was able to visit an amazing photography show the other day at Brigham Young University called “From Daguerreotype to Digital”. I thoroughly enjoyed the additional exposure to the history of photography outside of a textbook. The director there, I believe his name was Tom, was very knowledgeable on the subject and took our questions in stride. Towards the end of the show there was the digital display. Toms question to us [...]

Have you ever heard of the Sunny 16 Rule in relation to photography? Well, it is okay if you haven’t, but it is also something useful to have in your back pocket of knowledge. What is it? It’s a way to fairly accurately estimate your exposure on a sunny day. Why might you need to know this? Well, in case you forgot your light meter back at home, OR the meter in [...]

I am interested in putting together a bunch of tutorials and lessons to help you really understand photography. There’s more to capturing light than our modern cameras would like us to believe… (bad Auto, bad Auto!) So, what do you want to learn about? What doesn’t make sense? What would you like to know more about? Equipment? Photoshop? Exposure? Lighting? Please simply post comments here where I can then take your suggestions [...]

So, my final assignment for my typography class was to develop a print layout based on math. Earlier this semester in my photography class I had another assignment to make a pinhole camera. So, I decided to combine my knowledge of my pinhole camera and develop it into my math assignment… hence the title: The numbers within a picture. Basically, I’d like to share my article with you, in case you’re interested [...]

Well, it has been a little while now since I have written! Since my last posting, I’ve moved, and started school full time so I haven’t had much chance to be out photographing the world. This last weekend has been different though, and I developed 3 rolls of film, which has been fun. I shot one roll over the summer, and two the first couple weeks of school. These last two rolls [...]

In my photography class on Monday night, we learned how to approach the analysis of a photograph! It was very interesting, and it made me think a lot about how I look at other artists work. Often my art (photography, drawing, and paintings) are critiqued by fellow students, and my teachers… but only a few gave constructive and educated critiques. I wanted more! I also have been sending pictures of mine to [...]
